Ramblings on Character: Paige Henla
“Honor Nature. Honor Purity. Honor Peace.”
Dune is an interesting setting for me. I often struggle with established IPs seen on television, literature, or film as I often feel beholden to their ethos and any character I make becomes derivative of characters seen within it. However, I’ve not run into that problem with the Dune RPG and I cannot exactly pinpoint why. Perhaps it has a lot to do with the fact that there is a whole universe to explore.
I do like this idea that as a group you define your house, that might be an even bigger part of how to separate what you’re doing from, the established lore. It changes the paradigm of your creativity and puts you more in a collaborative space. This idea of beginning collaboratively is an interesting space to occupy from a more “mainstream” game, and I think that it is taking its cue from the indie space.
It is interesting to think of a property such as Dune as using Indie tropes, but it is fitting in a way. While I admit I haven’t read the entire series (just the first book), it isn’t lost on me that the Fremen exist on the fringes but become central to the plot. I cannot help but see the parallel.
When I created House Henla, I was keenly aware that, though minor, their influence could potentially become vast. A House of farmers and poisoners is surely to have their fingers in far too many pies. Despite that, they are focused on their family. It is strange to think of this small scope amidst a grand design. H and designing the house crest was a blast!
So, if you play Dune, I am interested in the stories that you plan to tell. Are they big or small in scope? What houses do you make, and how do they influence and shape the structures of the imperium?
I want to know it all!
Here is Paige Henla’s sheet, and remember:
