Ramblings on Character: Alexander Highsmith

It is fun to explore a game that you generally don’t connect with. A year or so ago, Griffin and I did a review of the Whole Wolf Game, Hunter: The Reckoning. I admit I was skeptical. I was such a fan of Changeling the Dreaming that I never truly connected with the game. Griffin let me see it in a new light, however, and now I find enjoyment in it. So when I went to make a character for last week’s stream, I decided to dive in again, and what resulted was a rather interesting exploration into what happens when the person who strives for that perfect American Dream™ can no longer stand by against a threat.

The idea that he is personally set against a group of fairy PTA moms and their dark court was especially intriguing to me. I think for me to enjoy Hunter, I must separate it from the World of Darkness at large. This isn’t a big leap for me as I tend to not do too much with crossovers in the Classic WoD lines anyway. I often found that their nematics didn’t mesh well for me.

So when I build these characters I often leave a lot of their backgrounds/merits/assets fairly vague. I want you all to use these characters for your own ends, and also leave blank spots for you to insert your own stories, your own agency.

Alexander is a little different, however. Weirdly his merits are so, so specific to his situation. His ally, Jacob, is his husband, and most likely a lawyer. Jacob doesn’t necessarily believe in his husband, but he supports him. His Bystanders are a teacher and another parent who were not imbued with the power to hunt, but who have been drawn into this web of power nonetheless! I named them Kim and Hannah; which is which at this point is largely unimportant. You’ll note that in his equipment he has a diaper bag and a suburban. I figure he probably has a couple of kids, one of which is still a baby. How do you balance that suburban life with monster hunting, and how do you keep those you love safe?

These are the deep questions for this hunter, if you want to play him you can find Alexander’s sheet here. Let us know what you think, about him or anything else, really, by joining our discord. You can find the link in the footer of the website!
