Ramblings on Character: Grady Murphey

Sometimes making a character isn’t easy.  Sometimes mistakes are made in the process, and this is really okay. Sometimes you get to learn a lot about the game when this happens. When creating a character using a system you’re unfamiliar with mistakes are bound to happen. But what happens in those mistakes? It allows me to dig into the text and better understand the underlying principles of the game. Because that’s the kicker, I think:  people too often want hyper narrative OR a super adherence to mechanics. I think both are important, and when looking at a game, the way they inform each other becomes vital to understanding it. This is why I say: make a character to truly understand a game. Seeing how the points and numbers on your sheet codify your skillset and how that translates into how you express the character’s voice while rolling dice (or spending tokens,  or whatever, really) is informative and, in my mind,  imperative to the campaign’s progress.  Measuring a character’s growth gives you milestones within a  game. Those milestones become keys to unlocking the narrative. Well, at least for me.

Here is Grady’s sheet. If you use him in a campaign, stop by the discord and tell us about him!
