Ramblings on Character: GAW
The party is an interesting idea in terms of gaming. In many ways, the group has its own sort of presence and purpose independent of the individual player characters. I like seeing games where you work on the croup purpose and abilities before you make your character. We’ve seen this in the Dune RPG and, more recently, in our stream where we made characters for The Great American Witch. I love that it requires you to establish what kind of coven you have and its dynamics before you even consider your witch. What happens if your witch runs counter to the ideals of her coven? What happens if the character happens to be a little too in line with the coven’s ideals?
When making a character, I often speak about how I like a setting to have some contextual weight. This group building gives much the same context in my mind. Having these built-in plot hooks gives me a lot; When you dive into the sometimes intimidating process of character creation, this context tells you what is essential to the game itself. In The Great American Witch, your coven and its dynamics (both internal and external) are paramount to the stories you tell with it.
