Ramblings on Character: In Nomine
If I’ve said it once I’ve said it a million times: I love character creation. What does one do though if character creation doesn’t love you? Sometimes a game can be brilliant, but the process to access it, grueling. That was kinda the case with last week’s stream. What is not to love about In Nomine? It’s compelling, dark, and campy as hell! But, the character creation process can leave something to be desired, that's for sure.
It was after the stream that I hit a stride with it. Kim and I had trouble finding the information we needed. There is something to be said for layout. But this makes me think of a larger issue in gaming: how to connect.
For me, enjoying a game largely comes from the enjoyment of character creation. But we all have our “systems”. So what do you do at your table when you can’t access that spark to inspire you? Unfortunately, there isn’t a single correct answer. I know that when I struggle to connect to a game, I reach out to friends who know it and begin to dissect its systems and themes. Most of the time, through this, I can find ways to enhance my clarity.
And though I am loath to admit it, sometimes I just don’t like a game, and that’s okay. You don’t have to like or connect with every game on the market. That’s why there are so many, and so many systems too. There isn’t a single right or wrong way to do things. Good and bad are often nebulous, and what is true for me might not ever be true for you.
In Nomine is like that I guess, it plays with the fundamental idea that good and evil might not always be so easily defined. And look at that: it all becomes crystal clear… Well, to me at any rate.
In light of that,
I’m sharing a couple of characters that I made that I later edited and completed because of the stream. They are a play on optics in a way. My Angel is a bartending pot dealer, an Elohim perfectly adept at being objective (pot is relative, you see) and the Demon just wants to live his life in peace, tattooing and seducing willing participants.
Hopefully, I’ll get to play them someday.
If you wanna ask Kim whatever happened to her Lillum, please join us on the discord (Theresa link below).
I want to have that conversation too!
